How do electrolytes work?

Electrolytes are mineral salts present in the blood and in cells. Sodium, potassium, calcium, zinc and magnesium are the most important for athletes. They disappear from our body via perspiration, which will be all the more important when the effort is intense and/or the outside temperature is high. This is why it is absolutely necessary to replace them with the consumption of an electrolyte drink, more simply called a hydration drink.

Mineral salts play a crucial role in our body:

  • Good muscle functioning: They allow better tone of muscle fibers to tense and relax.
  • Hydration regulation: sodium helps regulate the amount of water in our body. Stocking up on electrolytes allows you to store more water, which improves hydration, especially during physical exercise.
  • Maintaining PH balance: Mineral salts conduct an electrical charge, so they participate in the acid-base balance in body fluids.

Finally, a hydration drink usually contains no carbohydrates and remains very close to zero calories. It is therefore an ideal drink for those who wish to lose weight or athletes who consume energy bars, energy gels or energy compotes at the same time.

What is the difference between hydration drink and exercise drink?

Our electrolyte-based powder serves two purposes:

  • Facilitate hydration by promoting the assimilation of water by the body thanks to mineral salts, trace elements and vitamins.
  • Compensate for the loss of mineral salts through perspiration.

Its role is not to provide energy through carbohydrates and proteins (BCAA) like that of an exercise drink.

The two drinks are therefore complementary.

If you consume energy bars, energy gels or energy compotes during your exercise, then the hydration drink may be sufficient.

What are the effects of dehydration on your body?

Here are some examples of the effects or consequences of dehydration on your body. As a reminder, it is recommended to drink at least 1,5 liters of water per day for an adult. Above all, you should not wait until you are thirsty, especially for seniors who gradually lose the feeling of thirst and of course for athletes.

  • Blood pressure drops significantly, causing the heart to beat faster. The more exhausted the heart becomes, the more susceptible we are to heat stroke. Hence the need to drink very regularly during heatwaves.
  • A lack of water in the body promotes blood pressure, anxiety, bad mood, headaches, loss of attention, memory lapses and fatigue.
  • Dehydration of muscle cells which end up being less productive and even causing cramps. Lactic acid is poorly evacuated due to lack of water and remains in the muscles. This will of course impact the quality of post-exercise recovery for athletes.
  • Poor digestion, the symptoms of which are bloating, constipation or gastric reflux. Drinking enough water helps you digest faster and eliminate waste and toxins.
  • Skin problems. Dry skin, irritations and inflammations (acne, psoriasis, eczema) and premature aging of the skin are possible consequences of repeated poor hydration.
  • Weight gain. Lack of water sends a signal to the brain that can easily be associated with feelings of hunger and therefore snacking.

The last piece of advice, which seems obvious, is to replace the consumption of sodas and sugary drinks of all kinds (including juice) with water as much as possible. Many people have difficulty drinking water and blame it for its lack of taste. This is why our Mulebar diluting powders are flavored (red fruits and citrus fruits) without containing sugars (less than 0,2%). So treat yourself!

How to use : 

How to measure the powder for a can?

We recommend 10g of powder or 2 measuring 7 spoons per 500ml can. One dose covers the needs of one hour of effort by multiplying the doses in small sips. You should definitely not wait until you are thirsty, it will be too late!

All this remains theoretical and depends on numerous parameters: type of sport, duration and intensity of the effort, climatic conditions, body size of the athlete, etc.

We know, for example, that a trailer will tend to space out his doses and consume 1 dose over 1h30 - 2h in winter while a marathon runner or a cyclist will consume it more quickly. In summer its consumption will be at least doubled, i.e. one can per hour.

How many doses can you consume each day?

In terms of maximum daily quantities, a good benchmark may be the NRVs (nutrient reference values) for vitamins and minerals.

We therefore recommend 3 doses / day max

The idea is not to explode the daily intake as certain brands do by dosing certain vitamins or certain minerals at 100% by advocating the use of several containers during the day. We then find ourselves with 500% of the recommended daily intake for an active ingredient, which is aberrant and counterproductive. The surplus will be eliminated by the body.

When should you drink a hydration drink?

Our hydration drink can of course be consumed during sports practice but also on a daily basis, during periods of high heat, to compensate for losses in mineral salts linked to perspiration or by people, weaning themselves from sodas, who do not don't like pure water.

The athlete can consume it before, during or after exercise.

  • Before the effort, it will prepare the body and replenish its mineral salts.
  • During the effort, it promotes stable hydration by compensating for water losses, losses of mineral salts and by optimizing energy metabolism (production of energy by the body). All types of sports are concerned, whether they are high intensity such as combat sports, team or racket sports, endurance sports such as running, trail running, mountain biking, cycling and triathlon or activities calmer, but no less demanding, such as climbing, golfing or hiking.
  • After the effort, it will remineralize and rehydrate the body, especially if you have lacked water at any given time. This will make recovery much easier.
